Health and Fitness
Nordic walking is a wonderful activity for helping improve both health and fitness. As a result you may lose some weight, improve body confidence, gait and posture. Nordic walking helps relieve back pain, reduces joint stress, improves rehabilitation and can reduce the effects of repetitive stress injuries (RSI). It does not matter how fast you walk as the class caters for all abilities.
Nordic Walking is an entire body workout, but it does not seem like you are working out. It burns more calories than normal walking, between 20 - 46% more, which means it takes less effort to work off that extra cream bun, doughnut or chocolate bar. Try something new, an easy to learn, great value for money activity.
Suitability: All ages 12+, all abilities, shapes and sizes, men and women. Children age 12 – 15 must be accompanied by an adult.
Clothing: In summer, wear clothing comfortable for hot weather and either a high factor sun screen or total body cover. Consider wearing sun-glasses plus a hat to shade from the sun and reflect heat. In winter, we recommend three layers, namely smooth, breathable under garments (thermals in cold weather), warm layers like fleece topped off by windproof/waterproof outer layer. Shoes: Ideally, a walking trainer, alternatively walking boots – although this allows less movement of the ankle.
Classes
Your INWA instructor (Mervyn S Foster) is now offering classes in the St Ives/Fenstanton and surrounding areas, he holds full Liability Insurance and is a trained First Aider
Nordic Walking is a simple, effective and natural activity. And it is a fun, sociable way to achieve an outdoor fitness session, instead of going into a gym.
LEKI Nordic poles will be provided for the classes. To participate in our classes you will be required to fill out a short Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PARQ).
Beginners course
This consists of Four, 1½ hour weekly classes. Max of 12 participants.
This course takes you through the skills you need to master in order to exercise at the Health and Fitness Levels.
It includes how to develop speed, increase exercise intensity and to develop up hill and downhill technique.
The course includes:
Coaching with equipment (Nordic Walking poles)
Warm up and cooling down stretches,
Practising of the Nordic Walking technique
Feedback on performance.
Lessons 1 and 2: Introduces you to this sport, by demonstrating the technique and gets you going. By the completion of these classes you will be at the Health Level.
Lessons 3 and 4: Refines the basic techniques and focuses on the full body workout. These classes will take you up to the Fitness Level. At the end of this class you put it all together and show your technique.
Each class will include a warm up, coaching, walks to practise the technique and finishing with a cool down.
The classes are held in Fenstanton where there are asphalt paths and grass. I suggest footwear should be trainers with a good tread, with some support in the heel and lateral support to accommodate the long stride in Nordic Walking.
Clothing should be layered and on the cool side. With 40% more calories being burned, things warm up quickly.
